The Appalachian Trail runs about 2,200 miles (3,500 km) through 14 states, from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine. It follows the Appalachian Mountains and reaches its highest point at Kuwohi (6,643 ft / 2,025 m) in the Great Smoky Mountains. More than three million people hike parts of it each year; a thru-hike of the whole trail usually takes five to seven months.

This visualization shows the whole trail on the map, with its elevation profile running alongside. Named peaks are labeled along the profile, and more of them appear as you zoom in. Distances and elevations can be shown in metric or imperial units.

Reading the chart

  • Pan and zoom - the elevation profile follows the section of the trail that is currently visible on the map.
  • Handles - drag the two handles along the profile to select a section; the panel reports its length and total climb.
  • Probe - drag the small circle between the handles to read the elevation at any point and see nearby named peaks.
  • Compass - drag the compass to rotate the map.
  • Units - the toggle below the title switches between metric (kilometres and metres) and imperial units (miles and feet).
