Kungsleden — the King's Trail — runs through Sweden's northern wilderness, from Hemavan in the south to Abisko in the north. It crosses Abisko National Park in the north and the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Europe, in the south. The landscape shifts between alpine tundra, birch forest, river valleys, and bare mountain plateau.
The trail is dotted with mountain huts operated by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), making multi-week trips feasible without carrying a tent for most of the route. In summer it draws hikers from across Europe; in winter, cross-country skiers. The northernmost sections fall within the area of continuous daylight in June and polar night in December.
Reading the chart
- Pan and zoom — the elevation profile follows whatever section of the trail is currently visible on the map.
- Handles — drag the two handles along the profile to select a section; the panel reports its length and total climb.
- Probe — drag the small circle between the handles to read the elevation at any point, and reveal nearby huts, campsites, and other points of interest.
- Compass — drag the dial in the bottom-right corner to rotate the map; click its center to reset north-up.
