Along the Rhine

Along the Rhine

The Rhine rises in the Swiss Alps near the Gotthard Pass and flows 1,230 kilometres north to the North Sea in the Netherlands — through four countries, past medieval castles and cathedral cities, through one of Europe's most intensively farmed and industrialized river valleys, before spreading into the wide delta that made Rotterdam a global port.

A cycling route follows the river for most of its length, mostly along flat valley paths with occasional climbs around gorges. The famous Rhine Gorge between Bingen and Koblenz — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is the scenic centrepiece, flanked by steep vineyards and castle ruins on both banks.
