Bar chart over a world map of electricity generation by source, world 2025 estimate: coal 33.3%, gas 21.8%, hydro 13.9%, nuclear 8.8%, solar 8.7%, wind 8.5%

The World's Electricity Mix

Where does the world's electricity come from? This map shows how electricity is generated around the world: the share of coal, gas, other fossil fuels, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy and other renewables in the generation of each area, drawn as bar charts directly on the map.

Zoomed out, a single chart shows the world as a whole. In 2025, by Ember's estimate, coal still produced a third of the world's electricity (33%), while wind and solar together reached 17%, up from under 5% in 2015. Zooming in reveals the charts for more than 200 areas and how their mix has changed over ten years.

Reading the map

  • Zoomed out - one bar chart for the whole world. Each bar is an energy source, its height the source's share of electricity generation.
  • Zooming in a little - next to each world bar, the share of the same source ten years earlier.
  • Further in - a circle for each area, in the color of its largest energy source, followed by its own bar chart once there is room for its name and first bar. The largest producers are placed first, and charts never overlap. Bars are sorted by share, largest first; a chart shows as many as there is room for and gains more as you zoom in. Below each bar, the icon of its source, which also appears in the key, shows long before there is room for the source's name.
  • Fully zoomed in - where there is room, each chart compares every source with its share ten years earlier.
  • Year shown - each chart shows its own latest year, named with it (for example "Germany 2025"), and compares it with ten years earlier. The world chart shows the latest year with data for the world; while not all areas have reported that year, Ember estimates the missing ones, and the world figure is marked as an estimate.
